Pinworms are small, thin white worms that live in the human intestine. The medical condition is known as an infection caused by a parasite commonly called Enterobius vermicularis.

They are especially common in children because they can spread easily in households, schools, and daycare settings.
🧠 How Do Children Get Pinworms?
Pinworms spread through tiny eggs that are too small to see. A child may become infected by:
- Touching contaminated surfaces
- Not washing hands properly after using the toilet
- Putting hands in their mouth
- Sharing bedding or towels
- Scratching the infected area and spreading eggs
The eggs can survive on surfaces for a while, which makes reinfection common if hygiene is not carefully maintained.

The most noticeable symptom is intense itching around the anus at night.
This happens because:
- Female pinworms lay eggs around the anus while the child sleeps
- The movement of the worms and egg-laying causes irritation
- The itching becomes worse at night when the body is at rest
This is why parents often notice disturbed sleep, restlessness, or frequent waking.

Besides nighttime itching, other signs may include:
- Trouble sleeping or irritability
- Restless sleep
- Loss of appetite (in some cases)
- Mild stomach discomfort
- Visible tiny white worms around the anal area at night
Some children may not show symptoms at all, which is why infections can spread easily without being noticed.

Pinworm infections are usually not dangerous, but they can be very uncomfortable and disruptive.
If untreated, they may:
- Spread to other family members
- Cause repeated reinfection
